The Ultimate Guide to Carsharing in the Netherlands (2025)

Ever opened three different apps just to figure out which car is closest? Or tried to figure out how much your planned trip will actually cost?

One provider charges more per hour, another hits you hard on the kilometers, and a third uses confusing packages. What looks cheap at first can quickly become the most expensive choice. On top of that, availability and coverage vary — Check might work in Amsterdam, but not in Groningen; Sixt gets you abroad, but not always around the corner.

No wonder choosing feels overwhelming.

That’s exactly the pain we want to solve. In this guide, we’ll compare all major providers in the Netherlands — Greenwheels, MyWheels, Sixt, Free2Move, Check, and Vloto — across pricing, coverage, fleets, and more. By the end, you’ll know exactly which provider fits your trip.

Other providers: There are more carsharing providers in the Netherlands (e.g., Diks, Lynk & Co, Deelauto Hilversum), but these are quite small so we have excluded them for now. We will also cover Snappcar in a separate article as it has a different approach.

Why You Should Trust Us

We built WheelMatch, a comparison tool that runs thousands of trip scenarios across all major providers.

Our insights are data-driven and independent — no sponsorships, no hidden agenda. Just real comparisons on price, coverage, fleets, and international options.

Summary: Best Provider by Use Case

Here’s the short version if you just want answers:

  • Quick errands → Greenwheels or MyWheels
  • Cargo or bulky haul → Greenwheels (VW Caddy)
  • Day trip → Free2Move
  • Weekend getaway → Sixt
  • One-way → Sixt
  • International trips → Sixt or Free2Move
  • Premium EV feel → Vloto, Sixt, or MyWheels

But which one is actually best for you? The answer depends on more than just the trip type — let’s dive in!

Pricing

Sixt pricing example

Sixt offers variable pricing as well as time and distance packages.

Carsharing pricing looks simple at first, but every provider flips the formula a little differently. Greenwheels and MyWheels keep their hourly rates low but make up for it with high per-kilometer charges. That’s why they shine for short errands or city trips but quickly become expensive if you drive further.

On the other side, Sixt, Check, and Free2Move take the opposite approach: higher hourly costs but cheaper kilometers. They’re designed for people who cover more distance — but it’s not as simple as picking one of them for “long trips.” Packages, variable pricing, and time caps all mean that the cheapest option between these three will vary heavily depending on the exact trip details.

Vloto, finally, skips the game entirely with a flat hourly + per-km rate. It’s easy to understand but rarely the cheapest. What you’re really paying for here is access to premium EVs like the VW ID.4 or Polestar 2.

Takeaway: If you’re mostly clocking hours, Greenwheels and MyWheels win. If you’re mostly clocking kilometers, Sixt, Check, or Free2Move are more attractive — but which one is cheapest comes down to your specific trip.

Note: to keep it fair, we compared the cheapest cars at each provider, with no subscriptions or discounts.

Availability and Flexibility

MyWheels map

MyWheels has cars available in more than 100 cities and towns in the Netherlands.

Coverage can matter just as much as price. Greenwheels and MyWheels are the only providers with true nationwide reach, serving over 100 cities, so they’re the most reliable options if you live outside the Randstad.

Amsterdam, however, is the real battleground. All six providers operate there, which means residents have the most flexibility — whether you’re looking for a budget runaround with Check or a premium EV with Vloto. Airports and intercity trips are more limited: only Sixt and Free2Move let you drop a car off in another city or at Schiphol, making them the clear picks for travel that doesn’t end where it started.

Free-floating vs. zone vs. fixed parking

If you live in Amsterdam, you’ll notice three types of carsharing setups: free-floating, zone parking, and fixed parking. Free-floating (Sixt, Free2Move) lets you start and end trips anywhere within a defined city zone, so you don’t have to return the car to its original spot. Zone parking (MyWheels, Check, Vloto) means you can leave the car anywhere inside the provider’s area, but not outside it. Lastly, fixed parking (Greenwheels, MyWheels) works with permanently reserved spots — reliable, but less flexible.

If you’re in the city and want maximum flexibility, free-floating is king. If you prefer knowing exactly where to pick up and return, fixed spots save you hassle.

Car Models

Greenwheels car models

Greenwheels has a wide selection of small and large cars, and is the only provider that offers cargo vans.

When it comes to what you’ll actually be driving, not all providers are created equal.

Premium vs. compact

Sixt and Vloto focus more on the premium driving experience, giving you access to higher-end EVs like the BMW i4 or Polestar 2. Vloto goes even further by not having any advertising stickers on their cars, making them feel like your own personal car. On the other end of the spectrum, Free2Move and Check keep their fleets minimal, mostly smaller EVs that work well for quick A-to-B trips around the city. MyWheels stands out as the most versatile provider: from compact EVs to premium Teslas, it offers something for almost every scenario.

Cargo

Greenwheels is the only service that includes small cargo vans in its fleet, which makes it the go-to choice if you’re moving furniture or picking up bulk items.

International Travel

Most providers only allow driving in the Netherlands. The exceptions: Sixt and Free2Move.

  • Sixt Share → Full Western Europe coverage.
  • Free2Move → Limited to Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein.

Subscriptions

Many providers offer subscriptions to increase affordability for frequent drivers. We’ll cover this in detail in a separate post.

Conclusion

Carsharing in the Netherlands is no longer a niche convenience — it’s a real alternative to car ownership. But with each provider optimizing for a different use case, there’s no single “winner.”

  • Greenwheels and MyWheels excel at everyday errands and short trips.
  • Sixt and Free2Move unlock flexibility for longer distances, airports, and cross-border travel.
  • Vloto (and partly Sixt) stand out if you want a premium EV experience without the sticker ads.

The bigger takeaway? The best provider isn’t universal — it’s contextual. What feels cheap and convenient for one trip can be the most expensive or frustrating choice for another.

That’s why the smartest drivers don’t commit to just one app. Keeping accounts with at least two providers gives you the flexibility to always match the right car to the right trip — and avoid paying too much for the wrong one.

Carsharing isn’t about sticking with one set of wheels. It’s about always having the right ride at the right time.

FAQ

Do I need a subscription to use carsharing?
No. All providers let you rent without a subscription. Subscriptions just lower costs if you drive often.

Is fuel or charging included?
Yes, in almost all cases. You don’t pay extra at the pump or charger, but you may need to return the car with a minimum charge level.

Do I have to pay for parking?
Only if you park outside the provider’s allowed zones or fixed spots during your trip.

Can I take carsharing cars abroad?
Only Sixt and Free2Move currently allow cross-border trips. Others restrict use to within the Netherlands.

What about insurance and deductibles?
All providers include basic insurance. Expect a deductible between €250–1,000 unless you pay for extra coverage.
